The last post - Cabbage tree against a wall

The last post – cabbage tree against a wall

Well – here we are – Sunday December 31, 2017- time for the last post of the year!

Today’s daily photo may seem somewhat boring, but I have come to realise that I enjoy the “deadpan” style of photography which merely captures what I see around me without any thought given to intent behind the photo. Deadpan exponents would have photographers emotionally detached from the subject which is an approach I quite like.

When I started out with my daily photo challenge (to myself) on January 1 2017 I didn’t realise how difficult it actually would be.

My initial objective was to take, and post, a photo a day Рevery day Рfor the full year. But even before I started I realised that to do so would be a big task, so I decided on just posting a recently taken photo a day Рwith the majority of them being taken on the day of posting.

Thanks goodness for my photo archives! They came into play quite often.

In retrospect I think I have done pretty well with about 90% of my daily photos being taken on the day! Or the day before….

For anyone interested in doing a 365-photo-a-day challenge bear in mind that it is tough going.

It can be motivating and demotivating at the same time.

There were so many times when I wanted to give up because:

  • it was raining;
  • I couldn’t be bothered;
  • I didn’t know where to go to take a photo;
  • I didn’t know what to take a photo of;
  • it was raining again;
  • I had other things to do’
  • And so on….

Having said all that it can be exciting to see what you can come up with on the spur of the moment as the year long challenge can often move you out of your comfort zone.

Looking back over the year there are photos I’m glad I’ve taken, photos I wish I had never been bothered with, and one or two or more that I really like.

So please browse back through the year and see what you think.

This domain – www.dailyphoto.nz – will lapse and I will not be posting here again. I will continue to post over at www.rickharvey.nz from time to time.

In the meantime I wish you all a Happy New Year.

The big picture

Taken earlier today – The Big Picture – was shot with my Nikon D5100 and my old non-AI manual 28mm f2.8 Nikkor lens.

The big picture is looking to the west from the section of the Waihopai Walkway that runs alongside the stretch of the Waihopai River between Victoria Avenue and Dee Street in Invercargill

Deadpan in the heart of the city

I took the inspiration for todays daily photo – Deadpan in the heart of the city – from the work of German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher who, experts on deadpan photography say, practised the New Objectivity style of photography.

The old corrugated shed

Here’s another of my altered reality images – in other words three bracketed exposures merged to HDR and tone mapped.

This is a ubiquitous old corrugated iron shed in the light industrial area of Invercargill.
